What is a Dental Implant?

Dental Implants are used to replace missing teeth. They are sturdy artificial roots made of titanium metal, that are inserted into the jawbone and act as an anchor to replace the root of the natural tooth and hold the replacement tooth in place. An artificial replacement tooth is then later attached to the implant, thereby completing the restoration. The technique is commonly used to replace individual missing teeth and serve as a perfect solution for those needing a tooth or teeth replacement from decay, injury, or oral disease, or grinding. An ideal patient should have healthy gums and a strong jawbone to hold the implant in place.

  • Permanent and easy to care for

What is the procedure of getting a Dental implant?

Dental implant surgery may involve several procedures and can take many months to complete since the process requires that bone heal tightly around your implant. First, your dentist will carefully examine your mouth and take x-rays of your head, jaw, and teeth to determine if dental implants are right for you. If it’s determined that you’re a good candidate, your dentist will put a dental implant into your jawbone underneath the gum tissue, and then stitch the gum tissue back into place. As the tissue heals, the implant will bond with the bone and attach to the gum. This could take several months. Once the tissue has healed, your dentist will make a small incision in the gum, and then attach an abutment to the implant, which is a post that connects the replacement tooth to the implant. An artificial tooth is made, and your dentist attaches it to the abutment by cementing it or using a screw. If you are replacing several teeth or all of your teeth, a fixed bridge is anchored to your dental implants.

Who is a good candidate for a Dental Implant?

  • People who have one or more missing teeth. They can be used individually, or to support a number of dental prostheses, including implant-supported bridges and dentures.
  • People who have dentures, in order to improve the fit of their dentures when there are concerns about inadequate bone level causing improper fit, pain, and irritation to the gum tissue and the need for the use of denture adhesive.
  • Have a jawbone that has reached full growth
  • Have adequate bone to secure the implants or are able to have a bone graft
  • Have healthy oral tissues
  • Don’t have health any conditions that will affect bone healing
  • Are unable or unwilling to wear dentures
  • Want to improve their speech
  • Are willing to commit several months to the process
  • Don’t smoke tobacco
